Celebrating Excellence: King’s Birthday Honours for Altum Establishment Board Members

We are incredibly proud to celebrate a remarkable achievement within our Altum Classical Academy community. Two members of our Establishment Board have been recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours — a significant national acknowledgement of their outstanding contributions to education in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Dr Michael Johnston ONZM

Dr Michael Johnston has been appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for his services to education.

A cognitive psychologist, Dr Johnston has made a profound impact on educational assessment, curriculum design, and education reform across New Zealand. He played a key role in developing the NCEA grade score marking system, improving fairness and reliability in student assessment — a system still in use today.

More recently, he chaired the Ministerial Advisory Group tasked with redeveloping a knowledge-rich national curriculum for English and mathematics, and continues to contribute to curriculum development across all subject areas.

His work bridges research, policy, and classroom practice, influencing how education is delivered both nationally and internationally. As a member of our Establishment Board, we are privileged to benefit from his deep expertise and commitment to academic excellence.

Lorraine Taylor‑Tams MNZM

Lorraine Taylor‑Tams has been appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her services to education.

With more than 35 years’ experience in education — including over two decades as a principal — Lorraine has demonstrated exceptional leadership in both rural and urban school settings. She has led transformative curriculum design, strengthened partnerships with local iwi, and championed initiatives that improve student achievement and wellbeing.

Lorraine has also contributed at a national level, serving on Ministry of Education working groups and helping to develop key tools used across New Zealand schools. Notably, she was a member of the 2024 Ministerial Advisory Group for the national curriculum refresh.

As a fellow member of our Establishment Board, Lorraine brings a wealth of practical leadership experience and a strong commitment to equitable, high-quality education for every learner.

A Proud Moment for Our Community

These honours recognise not only individual excellence, but also a shared commitment to improving education for all young people in New Zealand. At Altum Classical Academy, we are deeply grateful to have leaders of such calibre guiding our journey.

Please join us in congratulating Dr Michael Johnston ONZM and Lorraine Taylor‑Tams MNZM on this well-deserved recognition. Their achievements inspire us all as we continue building a school grounded in excellence, character, and purpose.
